Cleveland's Hulett Ore Unloaders Are Being Scrapped!
Переглядів 73 тис.2 місяці тому
Cleveland, Ohio once had four Hulett Iron Ore Unloaders built in 1912 on Whiskey Island. These 880-ton machines revolutionized the time and efficiency of unloading Great Lakes ore boats in the 20th century. The Hulett Iron Ore Unloaders operated for 80 years, and two were scrapped in the year 2000, while the remaining ones were dismantled for future preservation. After 24 years of rusting away,...

Cleveland's Iconic Terminal Tower

The Terminal Tower is one of the most recognizable structures in downtown Cleveland. Some even consider it a symbol of the city. But did you know that when it was built, you could once board an intercity passenger train from the terminal? But why did the passenger trains leave the station in the first place? On December 8, 1909, Anchor Line's package freighter SS Clarion was heading down-bound Lake Erie in a winter gale when a fire was discovered in her cargo hold off Point Pelee, Ontario. As Clarion's crew were trying to extinguish the out-of-control fire, a bulk freighter grazed the package freighter and continued on its course without helping. Cleveland's Abandoned "Subway"
Переглядів 272 тис.Рік тому
Cleveland had a "subway" of sorts that allowed streetcars to access the lower deck of the Detroit-Superior Bridge (Veterans Memorial Bridge) between 1917 and 1954. Except for a few tours every now and then, this unique aspect of Cleveland's history is closed to the public. In this video, we'll not only look at the history of the Detroit-Superior Bridge, but we'll also explore the abandoned stre...

On January 21, 1895, Graham & Morton Transportation Company's "Chicora" departed from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, bound for St. Joseph-Benton Harbor, Michigan. I don’t live near the Great Lakes Region, however I am Fascinated by the OreBoats of the Great Lakes. Their Design is unique, and in my opinion, better looking than regular ocean going ships & other vessels with standard designs.

Great and very informative video. Pretty ambitious to lengthen her so much. Of note: 'last victory class ship to operate in the world....' Commercially... There are several in preservation that still operate, going on short excursion voyages.

In the end, Great Lake ships from the SS R. J. Hacket of 1869 all the way to the Algosoo of 1974 have Great Designs. The Pilot House Forward & Engine Cabins Aft arrangement is superior to the current common All Cabins Aft.

When Chicago and Detroit were invented, Cleveland was bound to fail. Canadian cities Toronto, etc. were coming on hot and a dowdy Ohio city fell by the wayside. Mobsters still sucked on the corpse but Cleveland became "the mistake on the lake".

Thank you for this well researched and documented video about the story of the Pere Marquette 18. The second mate, Walter Brown, was my great-grandfather. At the time the Pere Marquette sunk, and my great-grandfather died, his wife had a 4 year old son, also named Walter who was my grandfather and a 3 week old daughter. She waited for him on the Ludington pier that morning but of course he never returned. I have heard about this story from my mother since I was a child and did more research on it myself, reading several books and online articles, when I got into studying my familiy's ancestry. And, I've shared it with my own children. My son has especially taken and interest in his great-great grandfather Brown's story. Thank you again for telling this story. Linda Avery

You should do a documentary on the flour mill in the flats. It closed in 2020. The way they explained it was a mix of covid and a small railcar bridge that brought the wheat in that would cost $750,000 to update. 1635 Merwin avenue. We made white flour for Orlando which has a bakery in Cleveland among many others nearby. As well as animal feed for farms. They used to deliver the wheat by large ship in the early 1900s. Last flour mill along the Cuyahoga river. I was glad to be a part of it. They still have rings on one of the buildings where you would tie up your horse.

My dad, uncles and grandfather all worked for Sherwin Williams, just down the block from this "castle"... At least that's what I thought it was when I was a kid in the early 70s... I was in and out of that beautiful building countless times, whenever I "went to work" at the old Sherwin Williams Building just beyond the castle. Speaking of the old Sherwin Williams Building, wow, was that ever a beautiful structure! I remember well the front doors and their ornate grates... One giant door had a wrought iron monkey in a tree on it, the monkey was reaching for a cicada bug in another wrought iron tree on the other massive door. I've always wondered what ever happened to those magnificent pieces of artwork... If I didn't know any better, I'd bet they were just razed into the ground along with the rest of that majestic building. If I remember correctly, I think I was told that those particular doors and many other interior appointments in the old Sherwin Williams Building, were made by Louis Comfort Tiffany. And remembering the "castle" Train Station... Even as late as 1973-75, I remember all of the original woodwork in the building still being incredibly presentable. I wonder what it's like today?
